PRACTICAL ASSISTANCE FOR DISADVANTAGED CHILDREN IN MALAWI AND THEIR FAMILIES

ChildCare Malawi

ChildCare Malawi is a UK-based micro charity established in 2012, which provides practical assistance for disadvantaged and disabled children in Malawi and ongoing support for their families. We always start with a detailed assessment of each family’s circumstances and then work with them to build

lasting relationships and find sustainable ways of improving their standard of living. We believe in continuity of care and the importance of supporting all the children in each family instead of focusing exclusively on one child, which could result in sibling rivalry. Life is tough for the vast majority of Malawians living hand to mouth in one of the poorest countries in the world, but making ends meet is even more difficult for those facing additional challenges.

A practical, holistic approach

The individual support packages we create are carefully designed to raise aspirations and break the demoralising, repetitive cycle of abject poverty in low-income families. These could include a selection of the following interventions as appropriate:

Facilitating access to healthcare and sourcing wheelchairs for children.

Ensuring that children have the required educational materials, school uniforms and school fees, if applicable, to encourage regular attendance.

Distributing small fuel-efficient cooking stoves and portable solar lights.

★ Providing mosquito nets to protect families from malaria.

Distributing good quality, nearly new clothes, shoes, towels, bedding, toys and other useful items donated in the UK.

Providing sanitary products for women and girls to address period poverty.

Charitable status

ChildCare Malawi is unable to register with the Charity Commission because our annual income is less than £5,000. However, we are registered as

a Small Charity with HMRC, which entitles us to claim Gift Aid on eligible donations.
