PRACTICAL ASSISTANCE FOR DISADVANTAGED CHILDREN IN MALAWI AND THEIR FAMILIES

Children’s clothes and other items

According to statistics in the UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) Malawi Annual Report 2022, 60 per cent of children in Malawi are multi-dimensionally poor or deprived of two or more essential services, one in 18 children dies before the age of five, 36 per cent of children under the age of five are stunted, and 47 per cent of girls are married before the age of 18.

As described by IFAD (the International Fund for Agricultural Development), ‘The recurrence of external shocks also frustrates attempts to escape rural poverty. The most common shocks are weather-related and are leading to crop failures and increases in food prices.’ Illness or injury are also common, as are shocks associated with the death of family members, heightened by the HIV/AIDS epidemic.  As a result, poor households have to adopt costly coping strategies such as selling assets, withdrawing children from school and reducing food consumption.

Poverty inevitably hits children the hardest, particularly when a family’s ability to engage in productive activities is undermined.
